Today I will show you an example of 2 different fruits and how we call what is inside of them.

Sometimes you need to describe a part of fruit and if you will have to do it in Polish, here are some words you may use:

skórka – skin

miąższ - flesh

nasienie - seed

pestka – pith, pip

szypułka, (also called ogonek) – petiole

ogryzek – core

gniazdo nasienne – seed slot

łuski – husks

pęcherzyki z sokiem – juice vesicles

rdzeń owocowy – fruit core

Today I will try to give you some examples of refusal in a different situations you may find yourself in Poland.

Shopping at the store, when you are approached by the sales representative asking if she/he can help you with anything, sometimes you just feel like just looking around and you do not help…What do you say then?

Nie, dziękuję – no, thank you

Narazie tylko się rozglądam – I’m just browsing right now

Dam pani/panu znać, jeśli będę potrzebować pomocy – I will let you (polite form pani(f)/panu (m)) know if I need help

Nie dziękuję, nie potrzebuję pomocy – No thank you, I do not need help

If you are purchasing something and sales person will ask you about additional insurance, you may use these phrases:

Nie, dziękuję, nie potrzebuję dodatkowego ubezpieczenia/gwarancji – No, thank you, I do not need additional insurance/warranty

Wezmę tylko podstawową gwarancję – I will take only basic warranty

While walking  in public, you may be approached by a person doing gallup poll (ankieta) for some company. You may not feel like talking to anyone, so you can just simply say:

Nie, dziękuję – no, thank you

Dziękuję, ale nie jestem zainteresowana (f)/zainteresowany (m) – Thank you, but I’m not interested

Well, there are a lot of homeless people everywhere in the world. Probably everywhere, while you walking ,you may see a person like this begging for money. In this case decision is yours. But if you want to refuse, just say:

Proszę zostawić mnie w spokoju – please leave me alone

Another situation is when you want to refuse someone who is trying to invite you on a date:

Dziękuję, ale nie jestem zainteresowana (f)/zainteresowany (m) – Thank you, I’m not interested

Jestem zajęta (f)/zajęty (m) – I’m taken

Mam chłopaka/dziewczynę – I have a boyfriend/girlfriend

Mój mąż nie byłby szczęśliwy z tego powodu - My husband would not be happy about it

Moja żona nie byłaby szczęśliwa z tego powodu – My wife would not be happy about it

…and hopefully they get it!

Some of us are “early birds” which in Polish we describe as “ranne ptaszki” (singular: ranny ptaszek). Others like to sleep longer…I’m definitely in the second group.

to sleep longer - spać dłużej

person who likes to sleep a lot - śpioch (diminutive -  śpioszek)

Some of us use alarm clock (budzik) to wake up (obudzić się) in the morning. I always wake up without it…

Some of us like to lay in bed (leżeć w łóżku) and watch TV (oglądać telewizję) or read a book (czytać książkę) before getting up.

A lot of people like to get up early and work out (uprawiać sport), either at the gym (na siłowni) or outdoors (na świeżym powietrzu). Then they take a shower (brać prysznic), eat breakfast (jeść śniadanie), or not…and head to school (iść do szkoły) or work (iść do pracy)….or spend a day off the way they like.

Well, I definitely like to sleep longer and working from home definitely helps! I like to have my coffee (napić się kawy) and catch up on the news (nadrobić zaległości w wiadomościach), either on tv or in newspaper. (oglądać telewizję lub czytać gazety).

And how is your morning like? Try to describe it in Polish:)

„Dziesięć bałwanków”

Dziesięć bałwanków
było w jednym lesie,
ni mniej, ni więcej,
tylko właśnie 10.

Jeden się drapał
do dziupli na drzewie
i tak się zdrapał,
że zostało 9.

Dziewięć bałwanków
stało na polanie,
dokładnie dziewięć,
bałwan przy bałwanie.

Lecz jeden poczuł,
że go kręci w nosie.
Jak zaczął kichać,
to zostało 8.

Osiem bałwanków
stało w dalszym ciągu,
lecz jeden bał się
mrozu i przeciągów.

Więc włożył kożuch
i okrył się pledem.
Jak go odkryli,
to już było 7.

Z siedmiu bałwanków
jeden zaraz orzekł,
że się poślizgać
warto na jeziorze.

Lecz ledwie zdążył
na jezioro wleźć,
wpadł w taki poślizg,
że zostało 6.

Tych sześć bałwanków
stałoby do teraz,
lecz jeden bałwan
zaczął się rozbierać.

Chciał się ochłodzić,
miał na kąpiel chęć -
jak się rozebrał,
to zostało 5.

Z pięciu bałwanków
jeden zaraz ubył,
bo go ciekawość
przywiodła do zguby.

Nie wiedział po co
są kaloryfery -
jak się dowiedział,
to zostały 4.

Cztery bałwany
stały w dwuszeregu,
lecz jeden zaczął
tupać na kolegów.

Tupał i tupał,
bo był strasznie zły,
i tak się stupał,
że zostały 3.

Te trzy bałwanki
długo nie postały,
bo jeden bałwan
znał świetne kawały.

Z własnych dowcipów
śmiał się: – Cha! Cha! Cha!
i pękł ze śmiechu,
i zostały 2.

A jak została
tych bałwanków dwójka,
to się zaczęła
między nimi bójka…

Dziesięć bałwanków
było na polanie.
Ile zostało?
Oto jest pytanie!

Ten snowmen were in one forest, not more, not  less, but exactly 10

One was climbing to a hollow in a tree, and he climbed so hard that that it was only 9 left

Nine snowmen was in a clearing, exactly nine, snowman by snowman

But one felt that his nose is itching, as he began to sneeze, there was only 8 left

Eight snowmen has continued standing, but one was afraid of cold and drafts

So he put a sheepskin on and  covered himself with a blanket

Once hew as uncovered, there was only 7 left

Of the seven snowmen one said that it would be worth to go sliding on the lake

But he barely had time to climb on the lake, he fell into a skid and there was only 6 left

These six snowmen would stand until now, but one started taking his clothes off

He wanted to cool off and wanted to bathe, once he took his clothes off, there was only 5 left

Of the five snowmen one disappeared, because his curiosity brought him to destruction

He did not know what heaters are for, once he found out, there was only 4 left

Four snowmen stood in 2 rows, but one started stamping on his colleagues

He stamped and stamped because he was really upset, and he was stomping so hard that there was only 3 left

These three snowmen did not stand for too long, because one of them knew some great jokes

With his own jokes he laughed ha, ha, ha, and burst with laughter and there was only 2 left

And once there was only two left, then the fight between them started

Ten snowmen was in a clearing. How many there is left? That is a good question…

Kids still have dolls (lalki, singular – lalka) and teddy bears (misie, singular – misio). I used to love them and my little daughter is the same. She loves misie and lalki. She is 2, so she just started putting sentences together. She calls lalka “lala”, which is another name you can use while describing a doll.

You can still find different types of blocks (klocki) and marbles (szklane kulki)  at the toy stores as well. It is always fun playing with yo-yo (jo-jo), puzzles (puzzle) or play checkers (warcaby).

Boys are usually interested in cars, planes and trains (samochody, samoloty i pociągi), sometimes robots (roboty). Although robots have been replaced by computers (komputery) and electric toy cars in recent years.

Artsy things have not really changed much. Kids still love to paint and draw (malować i rysować), either with paints (farby), crayons (kredki), markers (flamastry) or pencils (ołówki).

Last, but not least, I have to mention books (książki, singular - książka). Books were my favorite and they still are to this day. They may have nicer paper or pictures now, but there are still books that have been popular 30, 20 or 10 years ago. I’m sure each person have this one favorite book from their childhood. A book that still can be found in a bookshop. I buy them and share them with my daughter:). Each country has their own authors and books that are popular only in that country. However there are plenty of stories that have been published in most languages and are famous in all countries.

One of my favorite books was “The children of Noisy Village” (sometimes called “Children from Bullerbyn”) – “Dzieci z Bullerbyn”.
